First visitors
Since Monday (21st August) we have been living full time at our new place. Last weekend we spent the weekend in Edmonton, meeting new relatives and cleaning up the apartment. No going back now anymore!
Working at the new place through Starlink goes really well. Luckily, I usually work in the morning, because in the evening internet gets slower because people come home from work, and everybody is using Starlink because it’s the only internet network available.
Last night and today, we had our first visitors. Bears… We had already seen pawprints at the entrance of our property, so we knew there were bears in the neighborhood. A mama and her cub. However last night she decided to visit us. This was our own, very dumb mistake. We had bought a closable bucket to put compost in it to start our compost. And clever us, thought to hang it outside our house so we wouldn’t have the smell inside and because we hung it up, small animals would not be able to get to it. However, we forgot the bears. We were already asleep when suddenly, Kima started growling and barking like crazy, Inti and Nayeli joined in, and they ran scared upstairs. So, the smallest dog, our puppy was the only one brave enough to keep barking in front of the door. We did not want to open the door, because we heard the bear trying to get the compost bucket open too. And there we were, half naked, with no guns, only a bear spray, and a glass door (of not too great quality), between us and a very impressive black bear. Seb tried to chase her away, by screaming through the window from upstairs, but she was not impressed. At some point, she managed to tear the bucket of the rope and took it with her. I must tell you that at that moment, you realize how small we humans are. But that is not all.

You see at that time; we thought it was a young male or something. We sent the next day some pictures we managed to take to our hunter friend. He said that because of the rather “small” size, it was probably a young male bear. But then later that day she decided to pay us another visit. I got a heart attack, because Kima was playing outside alone, and I had just taken her inside when 5 minutes later, Mama Bear came by again. And how do we know she was a mama bear? Well, she brought along her three cubs! Even our hunter friend was impressed that she was such a young mother. Seb tried to chase her away not leaving the porch, but she did again not seem impressed and slowly wandered off. Luckily her cubs were and did run off. I am so grateful that all our animals were inside at that moment. And I hope that Kima grows up quick and big. Because right now I am very happy with our decision to get a protection dog!
